Control the Engine

The Starting Line

I’ve spent years playing basketball.

Sprint.
Stop.
Change direction.
Sprint again.

That rhythm is useful on a basketball court.

It isn’t necessarily useful on a marathon course.

Some of that habit followed me into running.

I like to push when I feel good.
I like to change gears.
I like to see what I have.

But today’s 3 × 2 km gave me a different lesson.

The engine is there.

The endurance is there.

The lactate threshold is there.

What I need now is patience.

The Path

The target is simple.

4:14/km.

Not 4:00.

Not 4:05.

Not faster because I feel good.

The goal is to make 4:14 economical.

Then hold it.

Then hold it again.

The Concept2 is helping me learn the same lesson.

2,000 meters.

Controlled output.

No hills.
No traffic.
No reason to surge.

Just settle into the number and stay there.

My basketball background taught me to react.

Endurance racing requires me to respond.

There is a difference.

Feel good?

Stay controlled.

Feel bad?

Stay controlled.

Want to go faster?

Stay controlled.

The ego wants to prove something.

The marathon rewards patience.

The Finish Line

I don’t need to discover how fast I can run.

I need to discover how long I can stay at the right pace.

That means keeping the ego in check.

It means trusting the fitness.

It means letting the race come to me.

Control the engine.

Pace. Patience. Durability.

One Way Grit.
